As part of our commitment to ensuring a safe and reliable power supply for South East Queensland, we often purchases property to cater for future energy needs.
In 2009 we purchased a property at 31 Murarrie Road, Murarrie, as a possible site for a new 33,000/11,000 kilovolt substation required by 2015/2016.
As part of the site selection process, potential sites are assessed against a range of criteria including:
Our aim is to deliver the best outcomes for the wider community.
To date, we have met with representatives and members of the community and accommodated their feedback where possible into the project plans.
Following a Community Information Day held in October 2011, we committed to investigating an additional three sites in the area as possible locations for the proposed substation. The investigations have concluded the preferred site for the proposed substation remains 31 Murarrie Road. Please see the latest newsletter - Proposed Cannon Hill South Substation Update - for the results of all site investigations completed as a part of this project.
In February/March 2012, we will be seeking feedback from members of the community on design and landscaping plans.
At this stage, we do not have a final design of the proposed substation, however, we are committed to ensuring that modern substations are designed to blend with surrounding homes and the local environment.
For example, we recently built a substation on the corner of Oates Avenue and David Road, Holland Park East. Landscaping and fencing to minimise visual exposure of the substation to neighbouring properties and roads.
The final design of the proposed substation will be subject to a number of environmental, town planning, engineering and social considerations.
In the past ten years, demand for electricity has almost doubled. Although many people are becoming more energy efficient, average household use continues to grow due to increased use of appliances, such as air conditioners, computers and flat screen televisions.
Increasing energy use in the home, together with increasing population, means it is necessary for us to purchase sites in residential areas to meet the electricity demand.
