Kelvin Grove Substation

ENERGEX has received Development Approval from Brisbane City Council to construct a 110,000 volt to 11,000 volt (110/11 kV) Zone Substation at 113 Kelvin Grove Road, Kelvin Grove.

The $45 million-plus project will boost power supplies to more than 26,000 homes and businesses in Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs .

The project will also include the construction of two underground 110kV power cables from Paddington to Kelvin Grove, the establishment of twelve new 11kV powerlines from Kelvin Grove Substation and the reconfiguration of the existing distribution network in the area.

The project will allow for a complete overhaul of the electricity network in the Kelvin Grove area, providing significant increases in reliability of supply to residents and businesses in the area.

Why the project is needed?

In the past 10 years household demand for electricity in South East Queensland has almost doubled due to lifestyle changes, and increases in energy-hungry appliances such as air conditioners.

This, together with population and economic growth, will continue to drive significant increases in electricity demand.

Recent development in the Kelvin Grove area, specifically the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, has increased the need for additional electricity infrastructure in the area.

The suburb is currently supplied by substations in neighboring suburbs such as Milton Zone Substation, which is forecast to exceed capacity by summer 2013-14 if alternatives are not met.

Project design

The project design was approved under the Integrated Development Approval System (IDAS) by Brisbane City Council.

The final plans for the substation allow for an indoor design utilising low profile equipment, with vegetation and security fencing as screening from the road.
