Mudgeeraba to Tugun Network Upgrade Cancelled

Following a detailed review of the Mudgeeraba to Tugun 110kV powerline project and assessment of other network upgrade options to maintain reliable power supply to the Southern Gold Coast area, Energex has decided to cancel the project.

Considering current electricity demand and reduced load forecasts, the requirement for 110kV supply to the Southern Gold Coast has been deferred to beyond 2020.

Since the Project commenced in early 2008, there has been significant changes to project drivers. The following factors have informed Energex’s decision to cancel the Project:

  • Plans to augment the Tugun Desalination Plant’s capacity have been deferred and, as a result, original electricity requirements and security standards are no longer necessary
  • The current financial environment has reduced planning and investment in new and residential commercial developments in the area, and although overall growth is continuing, the original growth projections which the Project were based on are significantly higher than what has occurred
  • There is greater awareness of energy efficiency within the community that is reducing the energy demand for existing customers
  • The significant increase to the Project’s original cost estimate, due to the requirement to underground the powerline through Palm Beach, has increased the viability of upgrading existing network infrastructure and extending its lifespan.

Considering these factors, feedback received from large electricity users and key stakeholders during the options review, with upgrades to existing infrastructure including powerlines and substations, electricity demand in the area can be serviced by the current network.

Energex will continue to monitor the local area’s changing energy needs. Eventually, upgrades to the network will be required; when the need arises, Energex will engage with local stakeholders to identify the right network solution at that time.

Over the last four years, the Southern Gold Coast community has engaged with Energex and shared extensive feedback with the Project Team through meetings, information sessions and in excess of 1,200 formal written submissions. During this time an active Community Reference Group has also been heavily involved in the Project, representing the views of this community to the Project Team. Ultimately, the community has been instrumental in shaping this project outcome – thank you for your involvement in the Project.
