Parkinson Substation

Artist impression of the Parkinson SubstationENERGEX is proposing to establish a new 33,000 volt to 11,000 volt substation at 2903 Beaudesert Road Parkinson.

In addition to the substation, a new underground power cable along Beaudesert Road will connect the new substation to the existing Calamvale Substation.

Five underground cables will also be installed from the proposed Parkinson Substation to the local area to distribute electricity to homes and businesses.

The substation will reduce electricity demand on the Calamvale Substation and allow ENERGEX to cater for the continued residential and commercial growth in Parkinson and surrounding suburbs.

Why the project is needed

In the past 10 years household demand for electricity in South East Queensland has almost doubled due to lifestyle changes, primarily the increased use of air conditioning. This, together with population and economic growth, will continue to drive significant increases in electricity demand.

The Parkinson Zone Substation is required to improve electricity reliability to the local area by reducing the demand on the surrounding network.

Specifically, the proposed substation seeks to reduce demand on the existing substation at Calamvale, enabling ENERGEX to supply the region with highly reliable power and to restore power quickly in emergency events.

The substation will also be required to service future growth in daily demand for electricity in the region into the next decade.

Substation design

The substation will be equipped with:

  • Two 33,000 volt to 11,000 volt transformers
  • Two control/switch room buildings
  • A seven metre wide bitumen sealed driveway
  • An electrified safety fence around equipment and second non-electrified fence around the substation perimeter.
  • All electrical equipment will be enclosed or installed underground.

Visual amenity and the environment

ENERGEX will undertake significant landscaping works around the site to ensure the amenity of adjoining properties is protected.

Landscaping will include:

  • Retention of significant mature vegetation on the perimeter of the site.
  • Planting dense buffering vegetation around the northern and southern boundary.
  • Retaining vegetation and a pond on the western boundary which serves as habitat for local fauna.
  • Planting around the pond area to enhance habitat value.
  • Removing weeds and rubbish from the property.
  • New planting will consist of a mix of mature plants and tubestock.
