Wellington Road Substation redevelopment

February 2012 update - Minister has approved the project

In September 2011, the Minister for Energy and Water Utilities approved ENERGEX’s application to redevelop the Wellington Road Substation, in East Brisbane.

We would like to thank the community for your cooperation during the Community Infrastructure Designation (CID) Process. Now that the project has moved into the construction phase, we will continue to keep you informed and work with you as the project progresses.

Project approval process

Balancing the need for this new electricity infrastructure with the social and environmental expectations of the community is something we take very seriously.

We undertook a CID Process prior to submitting our application to the Minister for Energy and Water Utilities.

As part of the CID Process, we consulted with stakeholders, potentially affected landowners and community representatives and obtained feedback about the proposed redevelopment.

The Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared by independent consultant Urbis and presented findings from a detailed investigation of site selection, engineering considerations, and social, economic and environmental issues.

What will the approved redevelopment involve?

  • The construction of a new building to house a new switch room and existing equipment.
  • Improved visual amenity, including landscaping and revegetation.
  • Trenching and excavation to install new underground electricity cables from Wellington Road Substation to Coorparoo Substation.

What are the benefits of the redevelopment?

The current substation supplies more than 8,000 homes and businesses in the areas of East Brisbane, Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba, South Brisbane, Coorparoo, Norman Park, Highgate Hill and Greenslopes, including major hospitals, commercial centres and sporting facilities.

The substation improvements are designed to increase network capacity, support current and future business and residential growth and improve reliability in the area.

Previous Communications

We first announced the project in August 2010 and provided extensive communication to local residents, key stakeholders and the wider community throughout the community consultation process. Throughout this process we have been committed to working with the local community to actively seek comment and feedback. A range of communication tools have been used to involve the community at key stages throughout the proposal including;

  • Newsletters
  • Stakeholder letters
  • Advertisements
  • Public viewings of documentation

How does the Community Infrastructure Designation (CID) work?

The Community Infrastructure Designation (CID) Process outlines the steps for environmental assessment and consultation with the community about a proposed project to facilitate construction approval by the Queensland Government.

The CID Process is governed by the Sustainable Planning Act 2009.

Throughout this process we worked with planning firm Urbis in coordinating the environmental assessment and feedback in relation to the Wellington Road Substation Redevelopment proposal.

As part of this process, ENERGEX together with Urbis, have completed a Terms of Reference document for the proposed redevelopment of the Wellington Road Substation.
