Trees & powerlines

Trees and palms that interfere with powerlines are a safety risk and can interrupt your electricity supply. We spend more than $70 million each year to maintain a safe clearance between trees and powerlines.

Our tree trimming program reduces the risk of:

  • accidental electrocution
  • fires caused by electricity
  • power interruptions caused by branches touching or being blown into powerlines

How does ENERGEX manage the tree trimming program?

We employ contractors to complete the tree trimming program each year. Contractors use nationally approved pruning techniques to ensure trimmed trees remain healthy.

Please note, trees are not "shaped". Shaping places stress on the trees and can result in weak limbs and branches. Our contractors remove foliage instead.

Why are some trees removed?

Sometimes tree trimming does not solve the problem, especially if the wrong type of tree has been planted underneath the powerline.

We work with your local council to remove inappropriate trees growing on council property. Our crews and contractors adhere to strict vegetation management standards while trimming trees and vegetation.

How you can help

Plant only safetrees near powerlines. Safetrees grow less than four metres tall and don't tend to shed branches or fronds.

The safetree booklet suggests over 100 species that are safe to plant on your property. Before planting, call Dial Before You Dig on 1100 to avoid damaging underground services.

If you are concerned about trees on your property, or in your street, call our Contact Centre on 13 12 53 or submit the Trees Growing into Powerlines Form.
