distribution underground cable jointer

job purpose

Cable Jointers are responsible, both individually and as a member of a team, for the installation and maintenance of a wide range of cables, accessories and auxiliary equipment associated with underground electricity cable systems to ensure the safety, quality assurance and reliability of services. The Distribution Cable Jointer will work with cable systems up to 11kV.

  • Cables, cable accessories and auxiliary equipment associated with cable systems are installed and maintained in accordance with quality assurance, engineering design, time constraints, statutory requirements and relevant standards.
  • Compliance with the relevant standards, statutory requirements and procedures and the work is completed on time.
  • Knowledge and skills are maintained and upgraded to state of the art levels.
 
  • Standard tools, equipment and plant are maintained and repaired to ensure their safety and reliability.
  • Audit results indicating that tools, equipment and plant are appropriate to the tasks and being treated appropriately.
 
  • Work is performed in accordance with relevant standard work practices, Workplace Health & Safety and environmental standards.
  • Audit results indicating that work practices comply with set standards and non-compliances are reported.

duties

  • Follow established work practices, promote and maintain safety, whilst controlling environmental impacts and complying with legislative responsibilities. Identify and eliminate hazards and potentially dangerous situations.

  • Install and maintain a wide range of manufacturer's cables, accessories and auxiliary equipment associated with cable systems including cable systems such as XLPE, paper lead, fluid and gas filled.

  • Carry out safety audits, risk assessments and hazard management to ensure worksite safety in accordance with Workplace Health & Safety requirements.

  • Install and maintain oil/gas pressurisation equipment including oil tanks, pressure monitoring, gas cubicles, cylinders, gas leak detection and recording equipment.

  • Maintain oil and gas pressure cable systems within operational limits and investigate, locate and repair leaks.

  • Repair and maintain standard plant, tools and equipment.

  • Provide direction to the workteam by setting high standards of work quality and coaching or training the team members to achieve these standards.

  • Actively participate within a field environment to complete projects in the most efficient and effective manner, and provide input to project staging to achieve agreed time frames.
  • Assume responsibility for the security and well being of tools, plant and vehicles at the worksite.

job dimensions and relationships

The Underground Jointer works in a team environment, reports to the Underground Co-ordinator and is responsible for:

  • organising individual work within the scope of team activities;
  • liaison with Network Operations to gain access to work areas;
  • referring to documented work procedures and manuals;
  • liaise with other field staff and work groups within a hub environment.

The position has a reasonable degree of independence.

special requirements and working conditions

  • Participate in departmental standby roster and available for after hours call out in emergency situations.
  • Work is performed in enclosed spaces, deep excavations and at height.
  • Work may be performed live within statutory guidelines.
  • Work may be performed with exposure to oil compounds and may involve the handling of hot substances (eg molten metal).
  • Work may be performed under induced voltage conditions and appropriate safety procedures must be followed.

education/certification

  • Formal trade qualifications a distinct advantage.
  • Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Cable Jointer and / or Electrical Fitter Mechanic
  • A current drivers licence or ability to obtain

specialised job knowledge/demonstrated ability

  • Demonstrated commitment to improvements in safety performance, environmental performance and legal compliance.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability, to perform the installation and maintenance of a wide range of cable accessories and auxiliary equipment associated with cable systems.
  • Experience as an Underground Cable Jointer with XLPE, paper lead, fluid and gas filled cable systems desirable.
  • Ideally, demonstrated ability to apply large pressure wipes on oil and gas filled cable joints.
