Changes to the connection process

Changes to connections

Changes to the energy industry will commence in Queensland from 1 July 2012.

The changes are part of a national energy reform under the National Energy Customer Framework (NECF).

The most significant change for our contractors and service providers relates to connections.

From 1 July 2012, applications for new connections or alterations to existing connections will need to be made directly to ENERGEX.

The application can be submitted by the customer or anyone acting on their behalf.

Following lodgement of the application, ENERGEX will provide the connection applicant with an offer outlining the connection service.

If the applicant agrees to the terms and conditions, a contract will be made between the customer and ENERGEX for the connection service requested.

For some customers, this is an additional step in the process. Before we can safely connect the property or premise to the ENERGEX power network, you will still need to:

  • contact an energy retailer to set up an electricity account
  • complete an EWR

Keeping you up to date

To help you meet these new requirements, we are consulting with industry representatives and customers to deliver efficient solutions.

We will provide further opportunities to help you learn about and understand the changes.

Early Deployment of new connection process

On 1 July 2012, ENERGEX will participate in a national energy market reform that will see changes to processes for new connections and alterations to existing connections.

In preparation for the upcoming changes, we are implementing early deployment of the new processes for selected services (new connections or alterations to existing connections for loads >100amps and less than 1MVA; or <100amps where alterations are required) in the Central West Hub (based at Kelvin Grove) and North Coast Hub (based at Maroochydore) This means some customers seeking to apply for connection services that are inside the boundary of these Hub locations will follow the new connections process.

Early deployment of these changes is necessary for us to effectively deploy the new processes and related documentation within the timelines now under the new legislative requirements.  It will also ensure the customer experience in relation to the connections process is as convenient and efficient as possible.

For more information about the changes you can refer to Australian Energy Regulator (AER) website.

How to make an application for a new connection or an alteration to an existing connection

The new process for making an application for a new connection or an alteration to an existing connection is as follows:

  1. Contact us to advise that you require a new connection or an alteration to your existing connection. You will be provided a reference number once your call is logged.
  2. We will consult with you to determine your requirements and options for connection services. Should you wish to proceed, we will provide you with an application form and advise if any Application Fees are applicable.
  3. The application form can then be submitted to us via email or post along with the Application Fee if applicable.
  4. We will provide an offer outlining the connection services to be undertaken by us (including any detailed planning design requirements if necessary). If you agree (or the person applying on your behalf agrees) to the terms and conditions of this offer, a connection contract will be made between you and ENERGEX. It is important to note, if someone applies on your behalf, they are representing to ENERGEX that they are authorised to accept the terms and conditions on your behalf.

Before we can safely energise the connection, you will still need to:

  • contact an energy retailer
  • have a licensed electrician complete the work on your premise or property to Australian Standards and submit an Electrical Work Request

Please note: planning/design requirements and fees may be associated with some connection applications/offers.
