24 degrees Celsius
Set your air conditioner to 24 degrees Celsius – this is the most efficient setting for South East Queensland.
Restrict appliance use
Use your washing machine, dryer or any major appliance only when you need to, and wait until you have a full load.
Restrict pool pump use
Ask your local electrician about connecting your pool pump to Tariff 33, which could save money on your electricity bill.
Switch off the second fridge
Switch off the second fridge except when it's really needed. By turning off a single door fridge, you save more than a tonne of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce your electricity bill by approximately $130 each year.
Use lower wattage globes
Fit lower wattage globes (or compact fluorescent lamps), especially down lights and spot lights. This will save up to 75 per cent of greenhouse gas normally produced from incandescent lights.
Energy rating
Buy a fridge with an extra star on its label and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Turn off appliances
When not in use, turn off your appliances, such as your TV or computer, at the wall. These appliances still use power when in standby mode, so switching them off when not in use, saves energy.
Fan-forced ovens
Buy fan-forced ovens, they generate up to 35 per cent less greenhouse gas than conventional ovens.
Close windows, doors and curtains
When heating or cooling, close windows, external doors, doors to unheated areas, such as laundries and bathrooms, to keep the cool or warm air inside.
Use ceiling fans
Ceiling fans have the lowest emissions of all types of cooling systems.
