why is the cost added to my electricity account?

The reality is that at the moment fossil-fuelled energy is cheaper to produce than green energy from renewable sources. This will change eventually as more and more people demand green energy. Until then your purchase will offset the difference between the cost of green renewable energy and coal-powered energy.

Simply choose a level that suites your budget - from just $10 up to $120 per quarter - to be added to your electricity account. If you pay $10 extra a quarter we can purchase 330 kWh of renewable energy - that's enough to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated from running a typical refrigerator for the same period. Alternatively, $40 per quarter (over a 12-month period) would offset greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to leaving your car in the garage for a year.
