Energex crews are currently working to restore power to around 8,000 homes and businesses in South East Queensland (5pm update)
Storms and lightning have caused power interruptions across the Energex electricity supply area, including parts of Redland Bay, Logan, Sunshine Coast hinterland, areas around Gympie and parts of the Gold Coast.
Since midday, the GPATS lightning data centre has recorded more than 14,000 lightning strikes across greater South East Queensland. Most of these have been “cloud to ground” strikes, some of which have hit electricity infrastructure with reports of powerlines being brought down as a result. Wind gusts of more than 70kmh have also been recorded in the region during the afternoon.
If members of the public see any powerlines brought down or damaged, they are urged to keep themselves and others well away and phone Energex’s priority emergency number 13 19 62.
Energex is also closely watching other storm cells as they are develop and travel across the region
With storm season here residents are encouraged to prepare a storm kit including a torch with spare batteries and battery operated radio in case power interruptions occur.
Energex thanks customers for their patience while repairs are underway.
