ENERGEX is teaming up with Sunshine Coast apartment complex managers and owners in an Australian first partnership to reduce peak electricity demand – an issue on hot summer days which generally coincides with the peak tourist season.
The extension of the Energy Conservation Communities program into the tourism sector rewards unit managers and owners for allowing ENERGEX to install a small energy management device on air-conditioners in holiday units.
The devices are already being used successfully in thousands of Sunshine Coast homes and businesses participating in the Energy Conservation Communities program.
ENERGEX Sunshine Coast Asset Manager Steve Lynch said the program provides benefits for all.
“It’s no secret that tourists flock to the Sunshine Coast over the summer holidays to enjoy the sun, surf and sand,” he said.
“While the tourist influx is great for the region, holiday makers are unfortunately renowned for running their air-conditioners all day, which increases the peak power use by around 20 per cent and puts pressure on the electricity network – particularly on hot summer afternoons.
“By teaming up with complex managers and unit owners we can reduce this peak electricity demand.
“Unit managers and owners get great incentives for participating in the program, holiday makers can still use their air-conditioners without noticing any difference, and the community and ENERGEX benefit through the efficient use of the electricity network.”
ENERGEX will be hosting sessions for unit complex managers and owners to get more information about the program:
