Lockyer Valley power upgrades underway

31 May 2012

Work is progressing well on two separate projects designed to improve power supplies in parts of the Lockyer Valley.

The first project is a $2.2 million upgrade to Energex’s existing electricity substation at Tent Hill at the corner of Krenskes Road and Ingoldsby Road. Works involve replacing existing substation equipment with new equipment which will increase the available capacity for distribution to the local area.

The majority of the works will be contained to inside the substation, however there will be some local traffic movement and local network enhancements.

When completed later this year the project will improve power supplies to areas including Blenheim, Caffey, Egypt, Fordsdale, Gatton, Glen Cairn, Ingoldsby, Lilydale, Lower Tent Hill, Ma Ma Creek, Mount Whitestone, Rockside, Ropeley, Upper Tent Hill, West Haldon, Winwill and Woodlands.

Meanwhile a $1.2 million project designed to improve power supplies in and around Laidley and surrounding areas is also underway.

Energex began the upgrade a few weeks ago and weather permitting the project will be completed by late August. Once completed the network will see improved network supplies to Laidley, Laidley North, Plainland and Forest Hill.

Currently the area receives its power supplies through around 50 kilometres of overhead powerlines and a key component of the current works will be to sectionalise these supplies and install a range of new equipment.

Energex’s Asset Manager for Western Region Russ Howard said this would enable better network servicing and repairs in case of any faults caused to the power supplies due to severe weather, such as storms and bushfires, accidents or equipment faults.

Mr Howard said that during the works there would be some heavy vehicle movement so safety barriers and appropriate safety messaging have been put in place.

Mr Howard thanked the local community for their patience during the upgrades to the local Energex network.

This projects are part of a five-year capital expenditure program being undertaken by Energex to upgrade the South East Queensland electricity network.
