Newmarket electricity network to get powerful upgrade

3 February 2012

ENERGEX has announced plans to upgrade the Newmarket Substation to improve the reliability and capacity of the local power supply to Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs.

The $12 million project will involve expanding the existing substation site, located on Newmarket Road, to allow the installation of new electrical equipment. Existing substation equipment will also be replaced with newer, higher performing equipment.

The substation design will utilise a landscaping plan and low noise equipment to blend in with its suburban setting.

ENERGEX’s Asset Manager David Wise said the substation upgrade was designed to ensure ENERGEX continues to meet the growing electricity needs of more than 8,700 homes and businesses in Newmarket, Wilston, Windsor, Grange, Stafford, Alderley, Ashgrove and Kelvin Grove.

“Several factors including the rapid uptake of power hungry appliances like air conditioners, and the increasing popularity of home renovations, is seeing power use soar in Newmarket and surrounding suburbs – particularly at peak times,” he said.

“Power to the area is currently supplied by electrical equipment which is reaching the end of its service life, and this substation upgrade will ensure we can continue to meet residents’ increasing power needs.”

ENERGEX will be seeking approval for the construction of the new substation from Brisbane City Council. ENERGEX is committed to engaging local stakeholders in the area to provide feedback on the project plans.

If the upgrade proposal is approved by Council, work is expected to commence in early 2013.

The project is part of a record $5 billion-plus, five-year capital expenditure program being undertaken by ENERGEX. In the 2011-12 financial year, ENERGEX – South East Queensland’s electricity distributor, is investing around $1.11 billion on upgrades to its electricity network, while a further $331 million-plus has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – that’s an overall average of almost $4 million per day.
