ENERGEX has been given the green light to commence construction of a new electricity substation at Kelvin Grove and a range of associated network upgrades to the local power supplies.
The $45 million-plus, multi-stage project will boost power supplies to more than 26,000 homes and businesses in Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs.
The new substation and local network upgrades will enable ENERGEX to cater for current and future residential and commercial growth around Kelvin Grove, Paddington, Red Hill, Ashgrove, Herston, Spring Hill and Wilston.
Development Application approval has recently been received from Brisbane City Council, which is a critical milestone in allowing the upgrade.
The first stage of the project will involve demolition of the existing vacant building at the site (113 Kelvin Grove Road) to prepare the site for the construction of the substation.
Demolition works will commence during January, and weather permitting will take approximately eight weeks.
During this phase of the project some heavy vehicles will be entering and leaving the site. Most work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays however some works may be required outside of these times due to local conditions.
ENERGEX apologises for any convenience during these crucial works and aims to minimise the impacts of the operations on local residents and businesses and the traffic flow and pedestrian movement in the area.
The Kelvin Grove project is part of ENERGEX’s $5 billion-plus, five-year capital expenditure program. In the 2011-12 financial year ENERGEX is forecasting to invest around $1.11 billion on upgrades to its electricity network while a further $331 million-plus has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – that’s an overall average of almost $4 million a day.
