| Project description: | $5.15 million reliability improvement works |
| Suburb: | Capalaba, Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts |
| Description of works: | In Capalaba today, ENERGEX showcased its $5.15 million investment to further improve reliability across its south east Queensland electricity network. These works involves a comprehensive two-stage program to install and commission 100 automatic circuit reclosers (ACR). Stage one involved the installation of 50 ACRs, mainly within urban areas in Brisbane, Ipswich and on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts. As part of this project, three ACRs have been installed at Birkdale, Sheldon and Wellington Point to help improve reliability of supply to the Redlands community. Automatic circuit reclosers are basically like large switches that help to break powerlines into smaller parts. This has the advantage of limiting the number of customers affected by an interruption to electricity supply and also assists ENERGEX’s Control Centre to more accurately identify the exact location of a fault. The other benefit of ACRs is that they are operated by remote control. This enables the operators in our Control Centre to know if the ACR has tripped and the general location of the fault. Our crews are then directed more accurately to the fault area, which speeds up repair and restoration times. The second stage of the ACR project involves the installation of a further 50 remote-controlled ACRs, as well as the installation of additional network protection equipment on the poles on which the ACRs are installed. Works is scheduled to be completed on stage two by June 2004. |
| Benefits to the community: | Capalaba is part of a fast growing south-east corner and ACRs will ensure problems are isolated quickly, with the least amount of inconvenience to customers. |
