how you can take it easy and help save energy
- Use the BBQ instead of the cook top
- Switch the air-con to 24 degrees
- Delay the dishwasher to turn on later at night
- Hang out your washing instead of using the dryer
- Turn off TVs and computers when they are not being used
- Switch off your second fridge except when it’s really needed
- Switch appliances off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby power, especially when you go on holidays – it’s safer too.
- Change light bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps which use around 75 per cent less power while producing as much light as standard bulbs
- Wash clothes in cold water, avoid washing more loads than necessary, and dry clothes on the line rather than using a clothes dryer
- Only run your air conditioner when necessary, and set the temperature to 24 degrees in summer or consider using a fan instead
- Close curtains and blinds before your home gets too hot
- Set your hot water system to 65 degrees rather than 70 degrees
- When it’s hot think about dressing in lighter clothing rather than switching on air-conditioners
- Ensure the seals on your fridge are in good working order, and decide what you want from the fridge before opening the door
- Avoid using the oven while running air-conditioning in the hottest part of the day
