Choosing your electricity retailer

Queensland's electricity and gas markets have been open to competition since 1 July 2007.

Known as Full Retail Competition (FRC), this means that customers are able to choose their own electricity and gas retailers.

Energex remains the electricity distributor to customers in South East Queensland and will continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to your home and business.

Your retailer's role is to sell you the electricity that you consume. You should contact your retailer for all enquiries relating to the following:

  • connections
  • disconnections
  • billing
  • green energy

You should contact Energex for the following:

Retail electricity contracts - your choices as a customer

At any time, you have the option to:

  • Stay with your current electricity retailer and pay the regulated price set by the government.
  • Switch to a market contract with an electricity retailer of your choice.

For further information on Full Retail Competition and choosing an electricity retailer, please refer to our frequently asked questions or visit the Queensland Competition Authority website.

Regulation and licensing

Participants operating under Full Retail Competition in Queensland - including electricity distributors and customers - are governed by a series of regulatory instruments.

These provide coverage of all parties' rights and obligations in a fully competitive environment and include:

  • Electricity Act 1994
  • Electricity Regulations
  • Electricity Industry Code
  • Standard Connection Contract under the Electricity Industry Code

Further details can be found on the Energex Service Agreements page of our website.

Please note that Energex's obligation to hold a distribution authority has not changed as a result of Full Retail Competition.
