Safety at home
Electrical safety around the home is important, any electrical wiring, switches or appliances in your home that are not properly maintained are potential killers. You should also never do your own electrical work – always hire a licensed electrician.
Hundreds of Queenslanders have been hurt or seriously injured in their homes by unsafe electrical items and unauthorised electrical work. It is worthwhile taking some time to read the following safety tips relating to electricity around the home and outdoors.
Indoor Safety
Most electrical accidents happen indoors so consider taking some of these safety precautions.
Outdoor Safety
- Fallen powerlines, storms and trees can all cause electrical dangers and emergencies outdoors. Some simple precautions can prevent serious injury.
- Contact with overhead powerlines can be deadly, always 'Look up and live'. Some simple precautions can prevent serious injury and costly repairs.
- Avoid hitting underground power cables by checking with 'Dial Before You Dig'.
- Things to consider when using portable generators.
- Things to consider after installing solar power.
- Property poles and the responsibility of home or property owners.
Winter Safety
As the winter season approaches, it's important to take extra precautions and be vigilant with fire safety.
