Electrical safety tips for the outdoors
Overhead wires
A fallen powerline may not look dangerous but it is. Fallen lines may not make any noise or spark but they can still be "live", they can kill. Never touch a fallen line. Tell an adult instantly to call 000 and to keep other people away from the area.
Do not play with kites or planes near overhead powerlines.
Do not fly kites or planes near overhead powerlines. If a kite or plane hits an electrical line, the electricity may travel down the control line (wire) and hurt the person holding it.
Fly planes and kites in a big open space like a park or an oval, where there are no powerlines. If a kite or plane does get caught in powerlines, do not try to get it down. Contact ENERGEX to get it down.
Climbing trees
Check there are no powerlines near a tree before you climb it. If there are any electrical cords in a tree, even fairy lights, do not climb that tree.
Near the sea
Check for overhead lines when boating or near ramps. Booms and poles can hit lines and conduct electricity.
Do not cast fishing lines near electrical lines.
Do not try and throw anything over power lines.
Don't climb: poles, transmission towers (large metal towers that carry many wires), utility poles (that carry power to your home) or climb over or under substation fences or gates.
