Industry structure

Based in Queensland, Energex is one of the largest electricity corporations in Australia.

Energex Limited is a government-owned corporation operating under the provisions of the Government Owned Corporations Act 1993 (GOC Act).

The corporation pays a dividend to its Shareholding Ministers on behalf of the Queensland Government.

The electricity supply industry in which Energex operates is organised like links in a chain connecting the separate elements of generation, transmission, distribution and retail.

The electricity is supplied to Energex through a high-voltage transmission network that is owned and operated by Powerlink Queensland, a government owned corporation.

As electricity cannot be stored or branded to distinguish its generator, all electricity is centrally pooled and scheduled to meet demand. This pool is managed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
