Electrical Apprenticeships

Every time one of our customers switches on, plugs in or starts up, it’s the result of Energex employees bringing their experience and enthusiasm to work. If you’ve got the positive energy we’re looking for, you could get your career off to a great start as an Energex apprentice.

Our apprenticeships offer practical, on-the-job experience and lead to a nationally recognised qualification. During your apprenticeship, you’ll study the theory and the practice of your chosen trade at the Energex Technical Education Centre and spend some time on block release at TAFE. You’ll also be rotated through different areas of our business to get broad picture of how the electricity supply industry works.

Apprentice trades offered

The three apprentice trades offered¹ at Energex include:

1. Apprentice Electrician

As an Apprentice Electrician, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining electricity infrastructure. On a day-to-day basis you may construct, repair and maintain overhead, underground and substation power supply equipment.

An Apprentice Electrician with Energex holds the same qualification as a household electrician. However, Energex’s electricians don’t wire houses or buildings – they wire substations.

This is a very technical role and is suited to people who enjoy problem solving.

An electrician with Energex typically performs the following tasks:

  • Maintaining and building substations;
  • Emergency repair work;
  • Investigating power supply problems; and
  • Connecting customers.

2. Overhead Linesperson

Overhead Linespeople work at the heart of our business. They install, repair and maintain the overhead power network that supplies electricity to Energex customers.

As a Linesperson, you’ll enjoy the variety of working in different outdoor locations and your reasonable level of fitness will be important as you’ll be climbing and maintaining plenty of poles.

A Linesperson performs the following tasks:

  • Maintaining power poles;
  • Installing aerial equipment;
  • Emergency response work; and
  • Responding to loss of supply call outs.

3. Underground Cable Jointer

Underground Cable Jointers play an important role in creating and maintaining the infrastructure of our business. They protect the integrity of Energex power supplies by making and repairing joins in power cables installed in underground pipes and trenches, as well as preparing cable terminations for electrical equipment and overhead lines.

As a Cable Jointer, you’ll enjoy a challenging role that requires good hand skills and workmanship. Working in pits and tunnels, your work will include locating and repairing cable faults, pulling and feeding cables through underground pipes and making and repairing joins in cables.

As an Energex apprentice you’ll enjoy some great benefits including paid training, a nine-day fortnight and uniforms and tools are provided. Plus, you’ll get all the support you need to succeed and excellent career opportunities for the future.
