Common questions

What is the Positive Payback pool rewards offer?

You can save on your pool running costs by connecting your pump to an economy tariff. We will reward you with $200 for making this change because it also helps to lower demand on the electricity network.

How will I receive my reward?

Your reward will be deposited into your nominated bank account via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) within 6 weeks of a successful application.

How does the program help address peak electricity demand?

Pool pumps are one of the most energy-hungry appliances in a home and are a key contributor to peak demand. Excessive demand on the electricity network affects efficiency and costs. By switching to an off-peak tariff, you'll be saving money as well as helping Energex to deliver a stable network to the wider community.

How long will the offer be available?

The offer covers the connection of a pool pump to Economy Tariff 33 or Super Economy Tariff 31. At present, there is no end date for the offer, but this may be announced at a later date.

What are economy (off peak) tariffs?

Economy (off peak) tariffs provide electricity for up to 18 hours per day at a discounted rate. There are two economy tariffs available:

  • Super Economy Tariff 31 - Up to 44% saving; electricity supply is made available a minimum of 8 hours per day.
  • Economy Tariff 33 - Up to 15% saving; electricity supply is made available a minimum of 18 hours per day.

You will continue to pay the standard daily fixed rate for electricity at other times of day, or for appliances that are not connected to these tariffs. Contact your electricity retailer for the latest information on tariff rates and supply charges.

Why is Energex rewarding customers for making this change?

Pool pumps are one of the most energy-hungry appliances in a home and are a key contributor to peak demand. Excessive demand on the electricity network affects efficiency and costs. Having appliances like pool pumps permanently connected to economy (off peak) tariffs is a simple and cost effective way to reduce peak demand.

When the use of these appliances is moved outside of peak times, it reduces pressure on the electricity network, without making any difference to your household comfort levels. By taking up the pool rewards offer and connecting your pool pump to an economy tariff you'll be helping to reduce peak demand.

How much will I save by switching to an economy tariff?

The average pool pump accounts for more than 20% of a household's electricity use, costing more than $700 each year to run. Economy tariffs may save you up to 44% of your pool pump costs. Contact your electricity retailer for the latest information on their tariff rates and supply charges.

In addition to the year on year savings, we'll give you cashback of $200 for connecting to Economy Tariff 33 or Super Economy Tariff 31.

Can Energex recommend an electrician?

No. You will need to select your own electrician. When you contact an electrician, make sure they are experienced and qualified to do the relevant work to connect you to an economy tariff.

Can I connect my pool pump to Super Economy Tariff 31?

Yes, it's at the discretion of each individual to decide which tariff is suitable. There are a few things to consider:

  • Super Economy Tariff 31 is only available for eight hours per day (generally between 10pm and 6am). Running a pool pump between these times may impose on council noise restrictions.
  • Running your pump at selected hours may not be sufficient to maintain your pool. If you want to service your pool during the day, for example, you will pay the standard daily supply charge.

We recommended you consult your pool professional before deciding which tariff is right for you.

Is the cost of connecting my pool pump included as part of the offer?

No, you'll need to arrange and cover the cost for a qualified installer to connect your pool pump to Economy Tariff 33 or Super Economy Tariff 31. There will be an upfront meter installation charge applicable, and your electrician may charge a call out fee. You will be eligible for up to $200 reward to help cover the cost.

What time is Economy Tariff 33 available?

Economy Tariff 33 is available for at least 18 hours per day. The timing of these hours varies slightly according to location and time of year, but is generally set outside peak times.

How much does it cost to connect my pool pump to an economy tariff?

You'll need to consult your pool professional or electrician to discuss the charges involved for connecting your pool pump to an economy tariff.

I already have an economy tariff electricity meter installed. Will you still need to visit my property?

Yes. A metering provider will need to attend your premises to ensure it’s safe and perform any necessary upgrades to the meter.
