The Energex demand management story

Energex has the largest Demand Management (DM) program in Australia, with the majority of its residential customers participating in some form of DM initiative. It is widely regarded as leading the way in Australia to help manage electricity demand. ‘Demand management’ is the name given to programs that keep the network robust, even in times of peak demand, and plan towards long-term resilience.

Peak demand occurs when, as a community, our electricity consumption is at its highest. This usually happens daily from 4-8pm when energy-hungry appliances like air-conditioners and pool pumps are switched on at the same time as other everyday appliances. We also see peak demand on the network on days of extreme temperatures.

Positive Payback program

The Positive Payback program was developed in 2008 to address peak demand challenges in summer. This program offers cash rewards to customers who help manage demand via using economy tariffs or energy efficient appliances. Reducing demand reduces the costs of building and maintaining network infrastructure that is only used on a few days of high electricity demand.  Savings like this benefit everyone.

Energex tested the needs of the network and the best ways to help customers manage demand at home or at work through a range of trials and programs, before commencing the cashback schemes.

Since we initiated the Positive Payback program, the following has been achieved:

  • over 70,000 air-conditioners connected to the program
  • over 10,000 energy efficient pool pumps purchased & installed
  • over 60% of homes in South East Queensland connected to an economy tariff.
  • 1100 new customers are enrolling monthly.

Developing Australian standards

In a world first, Energex is working alongside appliance manufacturers and the CSIRO to develop standards to support demand response modes for a range of new technologies. Most recently, Standards Australia published AS4755.1, covering air-conditioners, electric boosted hot water heaters, swimming pool pumps, and battery energy storage systems. These standards are a way for Energex to encourage ongoing development of energy efficient appliances and better ensure the security of the network going forward.

Demand Management Plan 2017/18

We will continue to grow our programs to ensure we have a full range of solutions available to reduce forward growth in demand and improve overall utilisation of network assets.
