Skip to descriptionI moved here in the 1980s. I love living up here. It's beautiful. It's got the beautiful climate, wonderful soil for growing plants.
At my heart, I'm an environmentalist, I really want to save the planet. I want to do my bit for the environment.
It's a no brainer to put on solar do everything you can to help us reduce our footstep in the world.
When we put solar on the roof, the way we could maximise it was to put solar panels on various directions. There was north, west and east to maximise the amount of solar we got with the roof space we had.
When it came to our electricity supply, I had particular outcomes in mind.
I put the battery on so that we had continual supply at night and then I wanted a electric car so that I could then power my car as well as my house during the day.
Once Cyclone Alfred passed, the mountain had no power. It was completely off grid. The challenges were you had to throw food out of fridges. There was no water to flush toilets or showers. There was no Internet, there was nothing.
And including that, there was less light coming through because it was very cloudy. It was still raining. We were concerned that the battery wouldn't last through that period. So we had to conserve it much more carefully.
But at the same time, we sailed through it because we just took a few more precautions and we were able to conserve energy for the things that really mattered like the refrigerator and being able to pump water for flushing our toilets.
The challenges that we faced once I got batteries was that it, it wouldn't necessarily go all the night in winter.
So in the evening, when we put the air conditioning on warm, we found that it significantly reduced the battery overnight.
So it came from, from that, that I thought, well, because I have a modular battery system, I was able, I was able to put more modules on and get a, a better result.
Ultimately, my goal is to be kept comfortable with the amount of battery power we're storing at night, because that will allow me to not to worry when there's, when there's another power outage, I know that we will sail through properly without any problems at all. To be able to use my oven at night, put air con at night.
So sometime in the future I hope to put more modules on my batteries so that I don't have the challenges that I'm facing currently.

Skip to descriptionWe first bought this house 12 years ago, and when we purchased the house, the house maker included some solar, a small solar system as part of the house.
And yeah, for the first year it was magnificent. And then from there it piqued our curiosity and we said, aha, this can save us money. How about we go and invest in the solar system and make it larger so we can save even more money.
Got a reputable solar panel provider and expanded the system from one and a half kilowatts to five kilowatts.
We also had a perfect situation for solar because we have a roof that is never ever in shade.
And then when I was doing my research on solar batteries, this concept of AI tools managing the battery and the solar power and the energy usage in the house came to bear.
So once we took on AI, all of a sudden I didn't have to worry about when things would turn on and off. The AI started to do it for us.
So it was a sense of relief because all that AI is doing, is its goals are aligned to my goals. It just wants to save me money and it is constantly looking at ways to save me money.
It will look at the weather that I'm going to have a cloudy day for the next couple of days. So it might say I'll buy in more electricity into the battery overnight, store it and use it during the day.
In the event of a storm, the AI is magnificent. Not only does it predict that it might be cloudy next day after the storm and buying electricity when it can, but what it also does is handle a cut over.
So the grid is also all of a sudden gone down because of a storm, we'll all of a sudden see a flicker in the lights, and then a split second later the lights will be back on and it'll be running off battery. And the AI software has handled that.
So it's predictions about my energy usage are second to none. It knows that an EV is plugged in overnight and it's not going to use the battery for it, and it knows the rates of electricity usage that I have. It knows when it's cheap and when it's expensive.
So I'm about to retire shortly and one of our plans and aspirations is to expand our system further.
We've got 5 kilowatts of solar electricity on the house now. We're looking to expand that to as much as we can and increase our battery storage.
Mainly in retirement we don't want to be lumbered with any outstanding bills and we've had such success so far with it, why shouldn't we enhance that now and take advantage of the things that are out there now and respect the batteries?
