Storm warning: prepare for power outages

After last weekend’s severe weather brought cyclonic winds, cricket ball-sized hail, and more than 265,000 lightning strikes to South East Queensland, Energex is urging the community to prepare themselves and their properties for further storms forecast for this weekend.

This week, Energex crews repairing the network in Brisbane’s western suburbs discovered a significant amount of debris in powerlines, including outdoor furniture, building materials, and even a gazebo.

If you are in a storm warning area, check your yard and safely secure or stow any loose items to prevent network damage, protracted power outages or injuries to people and pets.

As with any severe weather event, power interruptions are possible and preparing in advance can help reduce inconvenience:

  • Charge essential devices such as phones, tablets, laptops, and portable battery packs before storms hit.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with torches, a battery-powered radio, spare batteries, long-life food, drinking water, and ensure BBQ gas bottles are filled.

If you lose power while cooking with an electric oven or cooktop, switch it off to prevent it from being re-energised when supply is restored and your property may be unattended.

If you see a fallen powerline, treat it as live. Stay at least 10 metres away and call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
