South East Queensland storms - 27 November evening
More storms moved across southern Queensland and into south-east Queensland this afternoon causing more outages on the Energex and Ergon Energy networks.
Energex field crews will work through the night to continue assessing and repairing damage so that power can be restored.
Energex has recorded more than 2million lightning strikes across the south-east during all the storm activity from Sunday afternoon to early this morning.
About 14,000 additional Energex and Ergon Energy Network customers lost power in storms this afternoon and earlier this evening.
As at 9pm this evening (Thursday), about 12,000 Energex customers were without supply. (about 7,000 customers who lost power in Monday’s storms will be without power overnight)
This means more than 95% of the total outages from Monday’s storms have been restored from a peak of 162,000 outages.
Winds of 170 kilometres per hour were recorded at Bribie Island as the storm hit on Monday night, which is akin to a category three cyclone.
Energex outages at 9pm were:
- Moreton Bay – 4,692
- Logan – 2,320
- Sunshine Coast – 2,200
- Noosa – 1,028
- Ipswich – 903
- Somerset – 360
- Gympie Regional Council – 75
The Energex outage finder website has been updated with latest estimated restoration timeframes based on yesterday’s progress and known network damage. All timeframes are dependent on weather and safe access.
We are hopeful of reconnecting the majority of customers tonight (Thursday), and the remaining customers in the hardest hit areas by tomorrow Friday (28 November).
Outage Finder will be progressively updated with refined timeframes as they become known.
Energex asks for residents to take extreme care when cleaning up storm debris, particularly fallen trees and vegetation, as fallen powerlines may be hidden underneath debris and could well be live.
Stay well away from all fallen powerlines – always treat them as if they are live - and call Energex on 13 19 62.
Customers who have received an Electricity Defect Report for damage to their equipment will need to engage a licensed electrical contractor to ensure everything’s safe, sign off on the form, and give us a call on 13 62 62 to get reconnected.
