South-east Queensland storms – 28 November

Energex and Ergon Energy Network Crews have restored power to 800 customers in South East Queensland overnight.

Energex field crews will work through the night to continue assessing and repairing damage so that power can be restored to the remainder of customers impacted by storms this week.

Energex has recorded more than 2million lightning strikes across the south-east during all the storm activity from Sunday afternoon to early this morning.

As at 6:15am this morning (Saturday 29 Nov), less than 800 Energex customers impacted from Monday’s storms were without supply.

This means more than 99% of the total outages from Monday’s storms have been restored from a peak of 162,000 outages.

Winds of 170 kilometres per hour were recorded at Bribie Island as the storm hit on Monday night, which is akin to a category three cyclone.

Energex outages at 6:30am were:

Moreton Bay – 239

Brisbane City – 76

Noosa – 339

Sunshine Coast – 103

Nearly 400 Ergon and Energex crews will be on the ground again this morning carrying out repairs and safety checking customer connections.

There are nearly 600 know properties with defects that crews will be going door to door to check switchboards and damage that are preventing customers from being reconnected to our network.

Customers are asked to provide the necessary access for our crews so they can do their work safely.

This means ensuring dogs and other animals are suitable restrained and that there is clear access to the switchboard.

Crews will not enter properties if they cannot see that dogs are suitably restrained.

The Energex outage finder website has been updated with latest estimated restoration timeframes based on yesterday’s progress and known network damage. All timeframes are dependent on weather and safe access.

We are hopeful of reconnecting the majority of customers tonight (Thursday), and the remaining customers in the hardest hit areas by tomorrow Friday (28 November).

Outage Finder will be progressively updated with refined timeframes as they become known.

Energex asks for residents to take extreme care when cleaning up storm debris, particularly fallen trees and vegetation, as fallen powerlines may be hidden underneath debris and could well be live.

Stay well away from all fallen powerlines – always treat them as if they are live - and call Energex on 13 19 62.

Customers who have received an Electricity Defect Report for damage to their equipment will need to engage a licensed electrical contractor to ensure everything’s safe, sign off on the form, and give us a call (13 62 62) to get reconnected.

The outage finder website can be changed between a view of outages by suburb, or a view by Local Council area.
